How is Proofing Paper different from regular photo paper?
Glossy Proofing Paper mimics the light reflective and brightness qualities of regular photographic paper. It has a highly reflective surface ideally suited to reproducing photographic images.
The point of a proof is to provide an accurate image of what the final image will be and this often includes photos. The difference lies in the fact that the proof does not need to demonstrate longevity to satisfy its purpose. One of the characteristics of Proofing Paper is its ability to dry instantaneously or very quickly after the application of the huge amount of ink necessary to imitate the offset printing processes. Oftentimes once a proof has been produced it will be laminated to maintain its appearance for what could be multiple handlings. The papers' specifications state whether they are better suited to cold (pressure) or thermal lamination processes. Photographic paper typically does not need additional protection to maintain the appearance of the printed image.
So, why not use Photographic Paper as an alternative medium to print out proofs, or vice versa? The multiple types of Photographic Paper come mainly in sheet options and many differing widths on rolls. The answer comes down to dollars and sense. While proofs can be printed out on photographic paper it is the more expensive alternative.
